10 Self-Care Ideas

Self-care is essential in everyday life. Self-care means taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health. When it comes to your mental health, self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy. As simple as it sounds, many of us pay little attention to self-care.

Self-care encourages you to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself so that you can exude those good feelings to others. You cannot give others what you don't have yourself. Some might say self-care is selfish, but it's far from that. When you pay attention to your well-being, you're energizing yourself so that you can be the best version of yourself for the people around you.

Here are 10 examples of self-care that I personally use in my everyday life.

1. Great Quality Sleep

Prioritizing your sleep habits improves mood, mental and physical performance, metabolism, and energy levels. Ensuring that you get 8 hours of sleep every-night sets you up for a successful next day.

2. Nutritious Meals

Fueling your body and eating healthy is essential to taking care of your body. This starts with a meal that most people skip, breakfast. I have found that incorporating breakfast to my everyday routine makes me feel better and more energized.

3. Exercising

Having some form of exercise daily is important for your physical health as well as mental health. This can include; going on a walk, run, doing yoga, a workout class, or simply going to the gym.

4. Taking a Lazy Day

Ever heard of a self-care day? Spend the day doing your favorite activities. This can include; shopping, hiking, watching movies, cooking, ect. Whatever you like to do. Life can get overwhelming and stressful. It is important to take a day for yourself every once in a while.

5. Journaling

Writing down your thoughts and feelings is a great form of self-care. You can just write notes in a notebook, or you can get a more structured journal that guides you to make goals and appreciate different things in your life.

6. Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is an alternative medicine that involves the use of essential oils, the power of smell to help with both physical and emotional issues. You can use these essential oils in a diffuser, or in your bath routine.

7. Cuddling With a Pet

Cuddling with pets can relieve emotional and physical stress. I know spending time with my dog makes me very happy and helps me not feel alone when I am struggling.

8. Treating Myself

Buying your favorite meal, those pair of shoes that you have been wanting, or that new makeup product you want to try are all examples of treating yourself. I am trying to save money like a lot of other people in society, but doing this every once in a while is good for self-care.

9. Baking

This might not be for everyone, but I enjoy baking. Focusing on creating and making something from scratch is fun for me. It is also very satisfying when the final product is ready, (It is also delicious).

10.Technology Detox

In the world today, technology is all around us. Whether you work on a computer, or are scrolling on your phone. It is important to put the devices down and give your brain and eyes a rest.

I encourage you to try these ideas, as well as whatever makes you feel the best. No one is the same and these might not work for everyone, but do what makes you happy. It is just very important that you set aside time for yourself and take care of yourself.
