Cool Down While You Exercise With This Swimming Pool Workout

Many people associate swimming pools with leisurely activities, such as floating. While it is definitely possible to relax, a pool is also a great place to work out.

Exercising in water adds resistance to your movements, which helps you build strength and endurance. The water also supports you, allowing you to increase flexibility. If you have a pool or have access to one, here are a few things to help you get the most out of your fitness routine.

Two Primary Benefits Of Working Out In A Swimming Pool

Water is denser than air. When you move through the air, there is little resistance. However, when you move through water, even simple motions can be tough. This increased resistance means it is more beneficial to work out in the water than on the land. Not only does exercising with resistance make you stronger and increase your endurance, but it is beneficial to your heart as well.

The danger of working with added resistance is it puts a strain on your joints. Sometimes, this can be more detrimental than beneficial. When you exercise in a pool, however, the natural buoyancy of the water reduces strain. Individuals with balance issues, osteoporosis, joint injuries and other conditions that might inhibit exercising on land may still safely work out in a pool.

Swimming Pool Safety Tips

Although working out in a pool has many benefits, there are a few safety issues you need to keep in mind.

You still sweat in the water. Though it is harder to notice, you do sweat when you are working out in a pool. Because of this, it is important to stay hydrated when swimming.

Listen to your body. Working out in the water is more strenuous than working out on land. If you feel lightheaded, get short of breath, feel weak or nauseous, develop pain or pressure in your chest or just get tired, stop exercising and get out of the water to rest. You can increase workout intensity and duration over time.

Don’t forget you are in the water. Remember that water is a hazard. Consider wearing a personal flotation device even if you are a strong swimmer.

Never work out alone. Whenever you are in the water, use the buddy system. A friend, family member or lifeguard should always be watching over you.

Best Swimming Pool Workout Gear

If you plan on working out in a pool, beyond the basics, such as a swim cap, goggles and earplugs, there are a few pieces of exercise equipment that can help you get the best workout.

Nike Swim Kickboard

A kickboard is what you need when you want to work out your legs. It allows your upper body to remain supported so you can focus on exercising your lower body. This kickboard is made of ethylene-vinyl acetate, or EVA, foam to provide a comfortable grip. The convex shape helps swimmers maintain stability and balance, while the bright orange color makes it easy to see.
